For the past two years, the Hotel Sorella and Bar Rosso have been operating on the corner of Roanoke and Ward Parkway on The Country Club Plaza. The elegant bar is located on the top floor overlooking the Plaza and local residences. During the summer, the doors open to a poolside lounge with easy access to refreshments from the bar.
Michael Scherzberg, head bartender and wine expert, has an impressive resume, including work in Hawaii and LA, but has come home to Kansas City to offer superb hospitality at Bar Rosso. His knowledge on spirits and classic cocktails helped to inspire the current holiday menu, which includes classics like the Aviation and Corpse Reviver #2, as well as unique creations such as the Christmas Orange and Evergreen Swizzle. Each cocktail is made with care and full of balance and flavor.
Christmas Orange: Roca Patron Resposado, Grand Marnier, Creme de Cocoa, Rum Chata, Whole Egg
Inspired by a classic stocking stuffer, the orange, this cocktail is an orangey-egg nog-like creation with the perfect balance of orange and cocoa flavors, complimented with spices and the overall frothiness of the drink.
The drink: light, frothy, citrusy, creamy, aromatic.
Evergreen Swizzle: Gin, Yellow Chartreuse, Allspice Dram, Fresh Lime, Rosemary.
Made with gin drinkers in mind, this fragrant cocktail is absolutely wonderful. It’s piney-ness and light nature make it a unique holiday drink. It’s very rosemary-forward with a tart finish and underlying spiciness.
The drink: herbal, refreshing, fragrant, piney.
Minty Hot Chocolate: Branca Mentha, Hot Chocolate, Freshly Whipped Cream
Created to be similar to an Irish Coffee, this hot cocktail is neither sweet nor overly caffeinated, making it the perfect after dinner treat. The Branca Mentha lends a smooth and creamy mintiness without overpowering the chocolate. And with freshly whipped cream (made to order), it really is the perfect nightcap.
The drink: creamy, chocolatey, smooth, warming, minty, cheerful.
With an impressive Happy Hour from 3-7pm and complimentary valet parking for restaurant and bar patrons, this lovely location is perfect for a first date, business meetings, and anniversary celebrations…or even a random Tuesday afternoon outing. You know you’ll be taken care of here. Oh, and if you’re feeling bold, try the Industry Sour #2 (Fernet Branca, Green Chartreuse, Lime, and simple syrup)…as Michael said, “For science, I’d better try it again!”
